Gabion Quality & Connections

Gabion Basket Connections: A Quality Checklist

Gabion basket connections are the lacing wire, spirals, clips or polypropylene strips that join panels, corners, diaphragms and the lid. They are a separate check from the strength of the gabion mesh itself. This list is what to look at before stone goes in. It is not the full gabion retaining wall installation sequence. Steel-wire baskets and polypropylene composite baskets do not share a joint.

Use the joint the system was tested with

A gabion box is panels plus the connection. On steel wire, that is usually lacing wire, rings or a spiral, at a spacing the specification names. On Shuangcheng polypropylene composite mesh, the joint is an interwoven polypropylene strip, not a steel tie. A tie that suits wire can cut a polymer rib.

Do not replace the specified strip with a cable tie, a rope or a scrap of geogrid. If someone wants a substitute, it needs its own test and written acceptance. A strong panel does not rescue a corner that was clipped in three places.

What to inspect before filling

Match the delivery to the approved mesh, the opening and the connector. Check the basket is the size on the drawing, the corners meet, and the diaphragms are in the bays the drawing shows. A one-metre diaphragm spacing is common on long boxes. It is not a rule you should invent if the drawing is silent. Ask.

On steel wire, look for broken coating at the twists and at cut ends. On polypropylene, look for cut ribs, a strip that skipped a cell, and a lid edge that was forced. Photograph a few joints. After filling, you will not see them.

The May 2024 brochure describes the strip connection as part of the composite basket. The report you want is the one for the connection on the quotation, not a mesh tensile figure reused as a joint figure.

During filling and at the lid

Filling is when a weak joint shows up as a bulge. Brace and lace as the stone rises, the way the method says, not after the face has already bowed. The full filling sequence sits in the gabion retaining wall installation guide. Here, the only question is whether the connection is still the one you approved.

The lid uses the same family of joint as the walls. Spot ties at the corners are not a closed lid. Adjacent gabion boxes in a wall or a revetment are connected to each other as well as to themselves. Miss that, and the face works as loose units.

Keep the drawings, the connector batch and the photos with the inspection record. A later argument about a failed face is otherwise a guess.

Frequently asked questions

Can I lace a polypropylene gabion with steel wire?

No, not unless that joint has been accepted for this mesh. The polypropylene system uses its own strips. Steel ties can cut the ribs.

Are cable ties a gabion connection?

Do not assume so. Use the connector supplied with the basket, or a substitute that has a test and written approval.

Is mesh tensile strength the same as connection strength?

No. Ask for the connection test on the joint you will build. A panel figure does not describe the corner.
