Gabion Baskets for Riverbank Protection: Design Checklist
Riverbank gabion baskets and gabion boxes are the stone-filled units used to armour a bank, hold a toe and follow a little settlement. This is a checklist for design and buying, not a hydraulic design. It covers galvanized and PVC-coated steel-wire gabions and polypropylene composite gabion mesh. The mesh is one line. The toe, the filter and the stone are the rest.

Name the river before the basket
Write down the design water level, the velocity or the shear the study uses, and where the bank is attacked: the face, the toe, or a bend. Add waves, debris, ice or boats if they exist. Add how often someone can get back to look.
If those are missing, a gabion quotation is a guess. Do not fill the gap with a velocity from another river.
The system, not only the mesh
Coordinate the foundation, the toe or the mattress apron, the filter, the basket size, the diaphragms, the bracing, the stone and the joint to the next type of protection. A gabion box on bare silt, with no toe, is not a revetment.
Polypropylene composite mesh removes the steel-wire rust mechanism in the wet. It does not remove UV on an exposed crest, abrasion from gravel, or a joint that was improvised. Coated steel wire stays on the list where the specification or the approval path requires it. Compare them on the same drawing.
What to send the supplier
- Plan, section and the toe detail.
- Gabion box and mattress sizes, and the delivery order if the bank is built in stages.
- Stone grading and where the stone comes from.
- Water chemistry, temperature and whether the mesh is usually submerged or in the splash.
- The tensile, connection and durability tests the contract already names.
- Any standard the engineer is working to.
What to ask back
Ask for the data sheet, the test reports for the grade being offered, the installation method for the connection, and how the panels are identified. If a life or a saving is claimed, ask for the assumption. Do not accept a year count or a percentage from a brochure as a specification.
For the polypropylene mesh, supplier data under Q/SCKJ 008-2023 includes an opening of 65 ± 3 mm and mesh tensile strength of at least 30 kN/m. Ask for rib strength and connection strength with the methods. Then check the stone against the opening.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the filter on a riverbank gabion non-negotiable?
Because the river will move fine soil through the stone if nothing holds it. The filter is designed for that soil and that water. The gabion mesh does not do it.
Does a non-metallic mesh mean less maintenance?
No. You still inspect for scour, settlement, stone loss and damage after floods. You have removed one rust path, not the river.
Which page compares riprap and concrete?
The riverbank methods note. This page is the checklist for the gabion version.
