Gabion Basics

What Is a Gabion Basket? Materials, Uses and Modern Alternatives

A gabion basket is a permeable stone-filled containment unit used in retaining, erosion-control and hydraulic works. The familiar steel-wire format is not the only material route available.

How a gabion basket works

Mesh panels form a box or mattress that contains durable, well-graded stone. The mass of the fill provides stability while the open stone structure allows drainage and can accommodate limited settlement.

Gabions are used for retaining walls, channel lining, riverbanks, slope toes, outlet protection and landscape structures. Performance depends on the complete system, including foundation, mesh, connections, bracing, fill and drainage.

Traditional and new-material mesh

Most buyers know woven or welded galvanized steel-wire gabions. Steel systems depend on wire diameter, coating integrity and exposure conditions for corrosion protection.

Polypropylene composite stretched mesh is a non-metallic alternative for suitable projects. It has no steel-wire rust mechanism and can offer easier handling, but temperature, ultraviolet exposure, chemical compatibility and design loads still require project review.

Frequently asked questions

Are all gabion baskets made from wire?

No. Steel wire is common, but non-metallic systems such as polypropylene composite stretched mesh are available for suitable applications.

Why are gabions permeable?

Voids between stones allow water to pass, which can reduce hydrostatic pressure when the foundation and filter design are correct.
