Specification Guide

How to Specify Gabion Mesh: Steel Wire or Polypropylene

A gabion mesh specification has to name more than the material. For a steel-wire gabion box or a polypropylene composite gabion box, write the opening, the tensile and connection figures, the test methods, and the documents that come with the supply.

Define measurable properties

  • Polymer grade and stabilizer or carbon-black requirements.
  • Mesh tensile strength in machine and transverse directions.
  • Individual rib tensile strength and junction or connection strength.
  • Nominal mesh opening and permitted tolerance.
  • Dimensional tolerances for panels and completed baskets.
  • Conditioning, test method and acceptance frequency for each declared value.

Define project exposure

State the design temperature range, ultraviolet exposure, water chemistry, contact substances, abrasion risk and any fire or heat exposure. Chemical resistance should be evaluated against the actual concentration, temperature and duration, not a generic label.

Define construction requirements

  • Approved panel layout, connector type and connection spacing.
  • Internal bracing arrangement and filling sequence.
  • Stone size, shape, durability and placement limits.
  • Foundation, filter and adjacent-work requirements.
  • Inspection records, repair procedure and acceptance criteria.

Shuangcheng reference data

For the polypropylene composite mesh described here, supplier data under enterprise standard Q/SCKJ 008-2023 lists carbon black of at least 2%, mesh tensile strength of at least 30 kN/m in both principal directions, individual rib tensile strength of at least 2200 N, and a nominal opening of 65 ± 3 mm. Ask for connection strength with the test method. Do not assume the connection figure is the same as the mesh figure. These values identify the product. The specification still has to name the tests and the acceptance rules.

These values identify the referenced Shuangcheng product basis; the final project specification should confirm the required test methods, sampling and acceptance rules.

Frequently asked questions

Should price be compared per square metre only?

No. Compare the complete installed system, transport, connectors, labor, maintenance assumptions and the same design basis.

Can supplier data replace engineering design?

No. Supplier data supports product evaluation; the project engineer remains responsible for design and compliance.

Project-specific support

Send drawings and exposure conditions for technical review

Product information supports evaluation and procurement; final design and regulatory compliance remain project-specific.
