Gabion Baskets for Riverbank Protection and Erosion Control
Gabion baskets for riverbank protection are stone-filled cages on the bank and at the toe. The mass and the flexibility are the point. The hydraulic forces, not the colour of the mesh, usually decide whether the bank stays. This page explains the basket. The checklist for what to specify and buy is separate. Galvanized and PVC-coated steel wire are the traditional gabion mesh. Polypropylene composite mesh is the steel-wire alternative.

What you are trying to stop
The river removes the bank by shear on the face, by waves, and by scour at the toe. A basket that looks tidy above the water does nothing if the toe has gone. Start with depth, velocity, the bend, the bed material and whether debris or ice hits the face. Those inputs are the design. They are not on this page as numbers.
How the gabion basket is put together as a system
A filter keeps soil from piping through the stone. Gabion boxes on the face give thickness and a step. A gabion mattress at the toe can follow the bed as it lowers. Neighbouring units are connected so one hole does not unzip the bank. The stone has to survive the wet and stay bigger than the mesh opening.
Diaphragms keep a long gabion box from bulging into one stone pile. Bracing does the same while you fill. Leave them out and the face is a different shape from the drawing by the end of the day.
Steel wire or polypropylene
Long wet exposure is why the coating on gabion wire gets argued about. Galvanized and PVC-coated wire work while the coating is continuous. Placement against rock, and gravel in the current, are how the coating is cut. Polypropylene composite gabion mesh has no steel core, so that particular failure does not start. Abrasion, sunlight on the dry crest and the strip joint are the checks that replace it.
It is not an automatic substitution. The drawing has to allow a non-metallic mesh, and the connection has to be the polypropylene one, not a lacing wire. Use the riverbank checklist for the documents. Use the mesh types guide if the question is woven wire versus welded mesh versus this polymer.
Frequently asked questions
Are gabion baskets used in fast rivers?
They can be, if the stone, the thickness and the toe match that river. A basket is not a yes for every velocity.
Why does the toe matter more than the visible face?
Scour takes the support away. The upper baskets then settle or slide even when their mesh is intact.
Does polypropylene replace galvanized wire on every bank?
Only where the design accepts it. It removes the steel-wire rust mechanism. It does not remove the need for a filter, a toe and a proper joint.
