Gabion Mesh and Gabion Wire Mesh for Gabion Walls

Gabion mesh is the containment layer of a gabion box. Buyers also search for gabion wire mesh, gabion wall mesh and gabion net. The usual choices are woven galvanized wire, welded steel panels, PVC-coated steel wire and polypropylene composite stretched mesh. They differ in corrosion, handling and how the panels are joined. This note is for specifying one of them, not for declaring a winner.

Type 1 — Woven double-twist steel-wire gabion

The traditional gabion mesh type. Galvanized steel wire is woven into a hexagonal double-twist pattern and formed into baskets. The mesh is flexible and can conform to uneven foundations. Corrosion protection depends on the zinc coating weight, any additional polymer coating, and the integrity of both through installation and service.

In practice the coating can be cut in transport, at a cut end, or during filling, and a wet or aggressive exposure then attacks the steel at that point. The cage is also heavy to handle. Those are reasons to compare a polypropylene mesh. They are not a market-size claim, and this page does not state a yuan value for the gabion market.

Type 2 — Welded steel-wire gabion panel

Welded mesh panels are stiffer than woven hexagonal mesh and produce a more uniform, architectural appearance. They are widely used in landscape retaining walls, urban infrastructure and projects where dimensional precision matters.

The weld points are a potential corrosion initiation site if the coating is damaged. Welded panels are less flexible than woven mesh and can crack at welds under differential settlement. They are generally heavier per unit area than woven mesh of equivalent strength.

Type 3 — Polypropylene composite stretched gabion mesh

A non-metallic alternative developed to address the corrosion limitations of steel-wire gabion. The mesh is manufactured by stretching polypropylene composite sheet to orient the polymer chains, forming an integrated grid structure with no separate wire or weld joint.

Because there is no steel wire, there is no galvanized coating to damage and no electrochemical rusting mechanism. The mesh is lighter than steel-wire equivalents — empty panels are easier to handle and transport. This can reduce site handling intensity and labour during assembly on steep slopes or remote riverbank sites. Request the supplier's weight comparison for the specific products being quoted.

Older supplier notes sometimes name rivers and sluices where a polymer grid was discussed. Those notes are not a history of this factory, and they are not a quotation. Do not copy a place name, a price or a service life from them into a specification.

Strength and connection comparison

Polypropylene composite stretched mesh achieves individual rib tensile strength comparable to equivalent steel-wire gabion mesh ribs. Shuangcheng's product specification records individual rib tensile strength of at least 2,200 N and mesh tensile strength of at least 30 kN/m in both principal directions.

The joint is not the same. Polypropylene composite mesh uses interlaced polymer strips. Steel-wire gabion mesh uses the tie, helical or lacing the system specifies. Ask for the connection test and its method. A different joint is not, by itself, a stronger wall.

  • Mesh tensile strength (PP composite): ≥ 30 kN/m in both directions
  • Individual rib tensile strength (PP composite): ≥ 2,200 N
  • Connection strength: ask for the test. Do not assume it equals the mesh figure
  • Mesh opening (PP composite): 65 ± 3 mm
  • Empty weight: ask for the quoted panel weight. Do not apply a percentage reduction

Durability and anti-ageing performance

Steel-wire gabion durability depends on coating integrity. Once the zinc layer is breached — by cutting, impact during filling, or abrasion from stone movement — corrosion accelerates at the exposed point. In permanently wet, saline or acid-alkali environments, even well-coated wire can corrode once the coating is breached. This note does not state a service life in years.

Polypropylene composite stretched mesh has no steel-wire rust mechanism. UV still applies. Antioxidants, light stabilisers and carbon black are part of the stabiliser package. Supplier data includes carbon black of at least 2%. Ask for the UV test method, the exposure and the strength that remained. Do not turn a laboratory hour or a retained percentage into a service life.

Vegetation can shade the mesh. A short outdoor note is not a service life, and this page does not state a strength loss or a cover percentage.

Ask for the test method, the exposure and the strength that remained. Do not turn an hour figure or a retained percentage into years of service.

Cost comparison over the project design life

Purchase price per square metre is not a useful cost comparison for gabion mesh. The relevant comparison is total installed cost over the design life, including replacement cycles, maintenance and stone fill.

Compare the mesh, the stone, the transport, the labour and the maintenance on the quotation in front of you. Older supplier notes about other rivers are not a price and not a life. Do not copy a place name or a percentage from them.

A lower price per metre on one historical job is not a result you can reuse. Ask for quotations on the quantities in this drawing.

Application suitability summary

  • Riverbank and channel protection: PP composite mesh preferred where persistent wet exposure, saline water or acid-alkali conditions make steel-wire corrosion a design risk
  • Slope protection: PP composite mesh reduces handling weight on steep or access-restricted sites; lighter panels are easier to position without mechanical equipment
  • Retaining walls: all three types are used; welded panel gives the most uniform appearance; PP composite removes the corrosion maintenance cycle
  • Coastal and tidal environments: PP composite mesh has no steel-wire rust mechanism; suitable for salt-spray and tidal wet-dry cycling
  • Coal mine and industrial sites: flame-retardant PP composite mesh (with zinc borate or bromine-antimony-phosphorus additive systems) is available for fire-risk environments
  • Ecological gabion: PP composite mesh is combined with vegetation mat systems to create green gabion structures that support plant root reinforcement and river corridor greening

Frequently asked questions

Which gabion mesh type lasts longest?

In wet, saline or acid-alkali environments, polypropylene composite stretched mesh has no steel-wire rust mechanism. Coated steel wire can still serve where the coating stays intact and the soil is mild. Which mesh lasts longer is a site question. This note does not answer it with a year.

Is polypropylene gabion mesh approved under Chinese standards?

Shuangcheng polypropylene composite stretched gabion mesh is manufactured to enterprise standard Q/SCKJ 008-2023. For projects requiring national standard compliance, confirm the applicable standard with the project engineer before specifying.

Can polypropylene gabion mesh be used in fire-risk environments?

Standard polypropylene is combustible but not easily ignited — it requires direct flame or temperatures above 350°C to burn. Flame-retardant grades with zinc borate or bromine-antimony-phosphorus additive systems are available for coal mine and other fire-risk applications.

What is the minimum stone size for polypropylene composite gabion mesh?

For Shuangcheng mesh with a 65 ± 3 mm opening, the minimum stone dimension should be at least 80 mm to prevent loss through the mesh. Confirm stone grading with the project engineer.

How does PP composite gabion mesh handle differential settlement?

The stretched polymer structure has some flexibility and can accommodate limited differential settlement. For sites with variable or compressible foundations, a geotechnical assessment should confirm whether the settlement tolerance of the chosen mesh type is adequate.
