Material Selection
Gabion Mesh Types: Woven, Welded and Polypropylene Stretched Mesh
The phrase gabion mesh covers several structures and materials. Choosing between them requires an understanding of how the mesh carries load, connects and responds to the environment.

Woven and welded steel mesh
Double-twisted woven wire can tolerate local wire breakage and has a long history in hydraulic works. Welded panels provide a regular appearance and stiffness useful in architectural or landscape applications.
Both are metallic systems. Their durability depends on wire quality, galvanizing or alloy coating, optional polymer coating, handling damage and exposure.
Polypropylene composite stretched mesh
The polymer sheet is stretched to form ribs and junctions as an integrated mesh. The material is non-metallic, so corrosion evaluation does not depend on protecting a steel core from rust.
The system can reduce handling weight and may suit selected acid, alkali, wet or soil-covered environments after compatibility review. It should not be treated as identical to woven wire in connection details or thermal behavior.
Selection checklist
- Required tensile and junction performance
- Deformation and connection behavior
- Temperature, UV and chemical exposure
- Fire and regulatory requirements
- Installation tools, fill method and quality control
- Local approvals and design-life basis
Frequently asked questions
Is welded gabion mesh the same as woven gabion mesh?
No. Their panel stiffness, connection details and deformation behavior differ.
Can polypropylene mesh replace steel wire directly?
Only after engineering review. The design, connections, exposure limits and installation method must match the selected system.
