Material Comparison

A Gabion Mesh Alternative to Galvanized Steel Wire

Galvanized gabion wire is the mesh most specifications still name. An alternative is worth a look when the problem is rust, a coating that will get damaged, or the weight of the empty panels. Polypropylene composite gabion mesh is that steel-wire alternative. It is not a cheaper galvanized basket with the zinc left off. This page says when the conversation is reasonable, and what must stay the same.

Why buyers ask

The usual reasons are wet or salty ground, acid or alkali soil, a filling method that scratches wire, and a crew that has to carry panels by hand. A polymer mesh has no zinc layer to nick, and it is lighter empty. The filled gabion basket weighs what the stone weighs.

What has to be redesigned, not renamed

The opening, the diaphragms, the lid and the connection change with the mesh. Steel lacing is not the polypropylene strip. Stiffness is different, so a face that was drawn as a welded panel will not look the same. Temperature, UV, fire rules and the approval path can all say no even when corrosion says yes.

Shuangcheng can quote the polypropylene mesh. It is not, on this comparison, offering to supply the galvanized basket as well. Ask for tensile, rib and connection figures with the test method. Do not approve the swap on price alone, and do not write a percentage saving into the contract from a general page.

Frequently asked questions

Is polypropylene cheaper than galvanized wire?

Sometimes on the mesh, sometimes not once freight, stone and labour are in. Compare quotations for the same gabion boxes. No saving is stated here.

Can it be used under water?

It can be considered. Hydraulic load, abrasion, chemistry and the joint still have to be accepted for that site.
