Installation

Gabion Basket Installation: Foundation, Filling and Inspection

Gabion basket installation is foundation, assembly, connections, stone and a lid that actually closes. Most bad walls start with a soft base, a joint that was only tied at the corners, or stone dropped in one tip. This is the outline for steel-wire gabion baskets and for polypropylene composite mesh. The step-by-step wall sequence is the gabion retaining wall installation guide. The polypropylene joint has its own assembly note.

Set out and the base

Mark line and level from the drawing, not from the nearest convenient edge. Remove soft spots and sharp objects. If a geotextile is shown under or behind the gabion, place it before the baskets cover it. Standing water is a drainage problem to solve, not a surface to set a basket on and hope.

Assemble, then fill

Build each gabion basket square, fit diaphragms, and complete the connection the system uses. Steel wire is laced or clipped the way that specification says. Polypropylene mesh uses polymer strips. Do not mix them because the crew already has hog rings on the truck.

Fill in layers, keep the stone even, and brace before the face bulges. An excavator can place stone if the method says how high the bucket stays. An uncontrolled drop cuts polymer ribs and knocks zinc off wire. Hand-place the face where someone will look at it.

The stone has to be larger than the opening and sound enough for the exposure. A minimum dimension around one and a half times the opening is a starting conversation, confirmed with a trial, not a number to stamp on every project.

Close and look

Level the top, shut the lid without standing on it to flatten a mound, and connect the lid on all edges. Connect basket to basket. Then look: dimensions, bulge, missed ties, torn mesh, filter still visible where it should be.

Write down what changed in the field. A gabion that was 'almost the drawing' is a different wall.

Frequently asked questions

Can the excavator tip stone straight in?

Only under a method that limits the drop. A high tip damages mesh and pushes the face out.

When do the braces go in?

As the drawing and the filling sequence say, before the basket has already deformed.

Is the polypropylene joint the same as lacing wire?

No. Same order of work, different connector. Use the connector supplied for that mesh.
