Gabion Mesh vs Geogrid
Gabion Mesh vs Plastic Geogrid: Different Products, Different Jobs
Gabion mesh and plastic geogrid are easy to mix up because both can be a polymer grid. They do different jobs. A gabion basket uses gabion mesh to hold stone. A geogrid is laid in soil or aggregate to reinforce it. Polypropylene composite stretched mesh is gabion mesh: a steel-wire alternative to galvanized or PVC-coated gabion wire, not a geogrid. For woven, welded and polypropylene gabion mesh side by side, see the gabion mesh types guide.

What gabion mesh is for
Gabion mesh is the wall of a gabion box, a gabion basket or a gabion mattress. It keeps the stone inside. The filled unit is a gravity mass or a revetment. The mesh is loaded as a container: it takes the pressure of the stone, the joints and whatever the face is asked to do.
The familiar gabion mesh is steel wire, woven or welded, galvanized, Galfan-coated or PVC-coated. Polypropylene composite mesh is the non-metallic version of that container. You still need diaphragms, a lid and a specified connection.
What plastic geogrid is for
Plastic geogrid is buried. Aggregate or soil locks into the apertures and the grid takes tension in the ground. That is how a road base or a reinforced soil slope uses it. Nobody fills a geogrid with a single stone cell and calls the roll a basket, unless they are forcing a product into the wrong job.
Aperture, rib strength and junction strength are specified for soil interaction. They are not a gabion opening and a gabion lacing wire. A strong geogrid roll does not prove a strong gabion corner.
Why the two get confused
Early polymer gabions were sometimes made by cutting and folding plastic geogrid. Shuangcheng's May 2024 brochure describes that route as the problem the composite gabion mesh was developed to leave behind: rib strength at a fold, the joint, and a box that holds its shape. The gabion mesh is made to be a basket. It is not a geogrid sold into a cage.
The opposite mistake is to specify the gabion mesh as soil reinforcement. If the drawing needs geogrid in the backfill behind a gabion face, that is a second product. The face mesh does not do the geogrid's job because both are polypropylene.
How to buy the right one
If the line item is a gabion box, ask for gabion mesh, the opening, the panel layout, the connection and the stone. Compare steel wire and polypropylene composite mesh on those points. If the line item is reinforcement under a road or in a reinforced soil mass, ask for geogrid and the direction of its strength.
Shuangcheng supplies the polypropylene gabion mesh, and it supplies geogrid as geogrid. A quotation should not use one test report for both. Short-term tensile strength, a connection test and a durability file answer different questions.
For the mesh-to-mesh comparison, woven wire, welded mesh and polypropylene, use the gabion mesh types guide. This page only separates gabion mesh from geogrid.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use plastic geogrid as gabion mesh?
Not as a straight swap. A gabion needs a panel that folds, a joint that matches the system, and an opening that suits the stone. A geogrid roll is specified to reinforce soil. Ask for the gabion mesh that was made for the basket.
Is polypropylene composite mesh a geogrid?
No. It is gabion mesh without a steel wire. Geogrid is a separate product, even when the polymer is also polypropylene.
Does 'no rust' mean I can use the gabion mesh as soil reinforcement?
No. Removing the steel-wire rust mechanism does not give the mesh a geogrid's job. If the soil needs reinforcement, specify geogrid.
