Erosion Control

Gabion Slope Protection for Erosion and Embankment Stabilization

Gabions can armor a surface, support a slope toe or form a stepped retaining structure. The correct role must be defined before selecting the basket geometry.

Identify the failure mechanism

  • Surface erosion from runoff
  • Toe scour or loss of support
  • Shallow sliding or raveling
  • Deep global instability
  • Groundwater pressure or piping

Match the solution

Mattresses can armor broad surfaces, while boxes can create toe mass or stepped retaining support. Neither should be expected to solve deep slope instability without geotechnical analysis and appropriate reinforcement or drainage.

Material durability

On wet slopes or chemically affected sites, polypropylene composite gabion mesh offers a non-metallic route without steel-wire rust. Tensile strength, connection capacity, UV exposure, temperature and construction damage must still be checked against the design.

Frequently asked questions

Will gabions stop every landslide?

No. They can address erosion and provide toe support, but deep instability requires geotechnical investigation and a designed stabilization system.

Why use a filter under slope gabions?

It limits soil migration through the stone while allowing drainage.
