Gabion Box Cost for a Stone Cage Retaining Wall

A gabion retaining wall price is the gabion mesh, the stone, the haul, the crew, the drainage and the maintenance the specification names. Use this note to compare quotations for steel-wire gabion mesh and polypropylene composite gabion mesh. It does not state a saving, a service life or a yuan figure.

What Determines the Cost of a Gabion Retaining Wall?

Price the gabion mesh, the stone, transport, labour, drainage and the maintenance the specification actually names. Those are the lines to line up against a concrete wall. A concrete quotation will name different lines, including formwork and reinforcement. Compare the two totals. Do not force them into one template.

A concrete wall and a gabion wall do not share a cost structure. Formwork, concrete and reinforcement are not the same items as gabion mesh, stone and labour. Do not assign the mesh, the stone or the labour a fixed share of the contract. Read those shares off the quotations for this wall.

Changing the mesh from steel wire to polypropylene composite mesh changes one line of the quotation, not the whole wall. It can also change later maintenance, because the polymer mesh has no steel-wire rust mechanism. That is not a design life, and it is not a saving stated over a fixed number of years. Ask the designer what maintenance the specification actually requires.

Material Cost: Mesh Cage

Steel-wire gabion mesh is often named as galvanized or Galfan-coated wire, commonly with a 2.7 mm body wire and an 80 mm × 100 mm hexagonal opening. Those are specification items, not a price. Galfan-coated wire is a different product from ordinary galvanized wire. Price the coating the drawing names.

Shuangcheng polypropylene composite gabion mesh is priced on the quotation, not by a standing comparison with Galfan-coated wire. Supplier information describes a lower handling weight than steel-wire mesh of the same nominal gabion box. Ask for the empty weight and the freight on that weight. Do not apply a percentage reduction to the freight.

Mesh area is a take-off from the drawing: faces, base, lid, ends and diaphragms. A sample wall length is not a standard price. Count the gabion boxes on the panel schedule and price that count.

Stone Fill Cost

Stone is often the largest material mass in the wall. The grading has to suit the mesh opening. For a 65 mm polypropylene mesh opening, a minimum stone size around 100 mm is a common starting check, confirmed with a trial fill. Angular stone interlocks more readily than rounded gravel. The quarry price is local. This article does not state a yuan-per-tonne rate.

Filled weight is mostly stone. This is arithmetic, not a quotation. Volume in cubic metres times the packed bulk density gives the mass. A density of 1,700 kg/m³ is only an illustration. Use the project stone. Do not multiply that illustration by a yuan rate from a general article.

Haulage from the quarry to the site can matter as much as the quarry price, especially where access is poor. A nearer source is often easier. There is no fixed distance that makes a gabion wall the low-cost option. Put the haul in the quotation.

Stone won on site can be used only if it meets the grading and the durability the drawing asks for. That can shorten the haul. It does not remove every transport cost, and it does not make the gabion wall equivalent to a concrete wall that brings in cement and reinforcement.

Labour Cost

Assembly, filling, closing and drainage are separate operations. A lighter polypropylene panel can be easier to carry than a steel-wire gabion box of the same nominal size. That does not fix a crew hour, and it does not remove bracing, a trial fill or the filter. Time the method on the drawing.

Labour rates are local. This article does not state a day rate or a yuan cost per square metre of wall face. Ask the contractor to price the crew against the panel schedule, the stone and the access.

A lower handling weight can reduce fatigue while the panels are placed. It does not, by itself, make the gabion box hold its shape, and it does not remove diaphragms or bracing. Both steel-wire and polypropylene gabion boxes still need the connections and the fill sequence on the drawing.

Real Project Cost Data from China

A published percentage is not the price of the next gabion box. Polypropylene composite mesh is a steel-wire alternative because it has no steel-wire rust mechanism. Initial cost and later maintenance are still site quotations. This article does not state a service life.

Older supplier notes sometimes describe a polymer-gabion revetment at a sluice. That note is not a current quotation. Do not copy a yuan saving, a formwork claim or a programme claim from it. Price this wall on its own drawing.

Older supplier notes sometimes describe a gabion-mattress lining on a river. They are not a current quotation, and they are not a percentage of a concrete lining. Vegetation through the mesh is a site outcome, not a maintenance saving. Price the items on this drawing again.

Drainage Cost

Drainage belongs in the price. Typical items are a geotextile filter, a granular drainage layer, a collector at the base and a way to keep surface water off the backfill. Thickness, pipe size and unit rates come from the design and the local quotation, not from a general article.

Do not drop the filter or the outlet to make two quotations look closer. A price without drainage is a different wall. This article does not give drainage a share of the contract or a yuan total.

Gabion stone is permeable, which is why these walls are used where water needs a path through the face. Fine soil can still move into the voids and block that path. The mesh, whether steel wire or polypropylene, does not replace the filter. A concrete wall needs its own drainage detail. Neither material is a reason to skip it.

Total Cost Summary and Comparison

Add the lines up from the drawing: gabion mesh, stone, transport, labour, access and drainage. Polypropylene composite mesh belongs in that list as a steel-wire alternative. It is not a cheaper default, and a sample yuan breakdown from another article does not belong in the specification.

Compared with cast-in-place reinforced concrete retaining wall of the same dimensions, gabion construction is not a stated percentage cheaper than concrete. Access, formwork and crew still belong in the two quotations, not in a general saving.

Polypropylene composite mesh can take the steel-wire rust mechanism out of the maintenance question. It does not make the wall the lowest-cost option, and it does not make the wall maintenance-free. Compare both quotations on the same drawing.

Frequently asked questions

A gabion retaining wall price depends on wall height, stone, site access and drainage. No yuan-per-square-metre rate is given here. That is not a percentage saving against a concrete wall. Compare the two quotations.

What is the biggest cost component in a gabion retaining wall?

On many walls the stone and the haul cost more than the empty gabion mesh. That is a reason to check the quarry and the access. It is not a fixed share of the contract, and it does not choose the mesh by itself.

Initial price and later maintenance are different numbers. Polypropylene composite gabion mesh avoids the steel-wire rust mechanism. That is not a percentage saving. Ask both suppliers for a quotation on the same gabion box, stone, transport and site, and let the designer judge maintenance.

Can I use stone excavated from the site to fill gabion boxes?

Only if the rock meets the grading and the durability on the drawing. For a 65 mm mesh opening, stone that cannot pass the opening is the starting check, and a minimum around 100 mm is a common trial size. Using that stone can shorten the haul. It does not remove every transport cost.

Is drainage included in gabion retaining wall cost estimates?

Yes. The filter, the drainage layer and the outlet are part of the wall. A price that omits them is not comparable with one that includes them. This article does not add a yuan figure for drainage.
