Gabion Mattress vs. Gabion Box: When to Use Each
Gabion mattresses and gabion boxes use similar stone-filled principles but solve different geometric and loading problems.

Gabion mattresses
Mattresses are relatively shallow units covering a broad area. They are commonly used for channel beds, bank revetments, outlet protection and flexible scour aprons where surface protection is more important than wall mass.
Gabion boxes
Boxes are deeper units stacked or stepped to create gravity mass. Typical uses include retaining walls, bank toes, weirs, headwalls and localized protection structures.
Selection factors
- Required mass and wall geometry
- Expected settlement and scour
- Hydraulic shear and stone stability
- Foundation and filter design
- Mesh tensile, connection and abrasion performance
- Metallic corrosion route or non-metallic alternative
Frequently asked questions
Can gabion mattresses form a retaining wall?
Their shallow geometry is normally suited to surface protection; deeper boxes are generally used when substantial gravity mass is needed.
Do both products need internal diaphragms?
Cell division and bracing follow the product design and dimensions. Use the approved drawings and system instructions.
