Gabion Basket Cost: What to Compare Before You Claim a Saving
Gabion basket cost is the mesh, the stone, the transport, the labour and whatever you spend later. A lower price per square metre of gabion mesh is not the project. This page is how to compare galvanized or PVC-coated steel-wire gabions with polypropylene composite gabion mesh. It does not state a saving, a design life, or a case-study percentage. What the first price leaves out
Steel-wire gabion mesh and polypropylene composite mesh do not weigh the same empty, and they do not pack the same way. That can change freight and how many people it takes to place a panel on a bank. Ask for the empty weight of the exact gabion box. Do not apply a percentage to the labour bill from a general article.
The filled basket is mostly stone. Stone, haul and placing often dwarf the mesh line. A comparison that prices only the mesh is not a wall cost.
Maintenance is a question, not a zero
Coated steel wire can need attention where the coating is cut and the site is wet or salty. Polypropylene composite mesh has no steel-wire rust mechanism. It can still be cut, abraded or left with a poor joint. Put inspection in both comparisons. Do not write a replacement year, and do not call either mesh maintenance-free.
If someone offers a lifecycle multiple or a percent saved over 20 or 50 years, ask for the assumption and then price the job again. Those figures are not used on this page.
How to line the quotations up
- Same gabion box and mattress schedule, same stone specification.
- Mesh opening, wire or polymer, and the connection, each with a test method.
- Empty weight, packing and the delivery place.
- Who fills, who supplies stone, and what equipment the method needs.
- What is excluded: filter, foundation, toe, installation.
- A line for later inspection. No invented interval.

It can change handling. It does not by itself cut the stone, the foundation or the toe. Ask for the empty weight and price the crew you will actually use.
