Chemical Resistance
Acid- and Alkali-Resistant Gabion Materials: What Engineers Should Check
Acid-alkali resistance is a compatibility question, not a universal yes-or-no label. Site chemistry and exposure conditions must be defined before material selection.

Define the exposure
- Chemical identity and mixture
- Concentration and pH
- Continuous immersion, splash or intermittent contact
- Temperature and exposure duration
- UV, stress, abrasion and biological conditions
- Possible cleaning agents or process changes
Steel and polypropylene routes
Acidic, alkaline or saline media can attack metallic coatings and eventually the steel core depending on chemistry and damage. A coating system must be selected and verified for the site.
Polypropylene generally offers useful resistance to many aqueous acids and alkalis and does not rust. However, oxidizing chemicals, solvents, elevated temperature and sustained stress can change compatibility, so product-specific confirmation is required.
Specify evidence
Request chemical-resistance data for the actual media, along with retained tensile performance, aging basis and limitations. Field joints and other components must be compatible too; the basket is only as durable as its least resistant component.
Frequently asked questions
Is polypropylene completely acid proof?
No. Compatibility varies with chemical, concentration, temperature, duration and stress.
Does pH alone determine suitability?
No. Chemical identity and oxidizing strength can matter even when two solutions have similar pH.
Project-specific support
Send drawings and exposure conditions for technical review
Product information supports evaluation and procurement; final design and regulatory compliance remain project-specific.
